Conditions ⓘ

Use a suitable LED and prevent upward spill. Keep light low, shielded and on only when needed. Suitability depends on placement and the surrounding habitat; color alone is not enough.

Turtle friendlyRequires monochromatic amber ⓘ

Choose monochromatic amber, not 2700K warm white. Keep the source low and fully shielded, with no light visible from or spilling onto the beach. Check local requirements for the installation. This badge is conditional guidance, not a certification.

Choosing an LED color

A welcoming, warm appearance for outdoor living spaces, paths and planting.

An amber option for wildlife-conscious projects. The right choice depends on the habitat and species you are designing around.

Color alone does not determine wildlife suitability. Direction, intensity, timing and habitat matter too.

The light, its use and its story

Set flush into paving, the Dimpsy washes light out and across the ground in a broad triangular spread, marking a route without ever interrupting the line of the hardscape. There's no fixture standing proud, nothing to mow around or catch a foot on - only the light itself.

Its output runs very close to horizontal, hugging the ground plane so that the great majority of the light lands where it's needed. A small amount does carry marginally above the horizontal, so placement matters more with this fixture than any other in the range: keep it clear of open sightlines, water margins and hedgerows, and it does its work with a very small footprint indeed.

Dimpsy is a West Country word for twilight - as in "it's going dimpsy." A soft, low, fading light. We couldn't think of a better description of what this fixture does.

Every Hudson fixture takes its name from the British landscape after dark - its creatures, its plants, and the old country words for dusk.

in 2023 Lucy contacted us to help provide a design and illumination for her garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower show in 2023. In 2023, we were very much trying get the message out about garden lighting, which is better for wildlife and the wider world. In this project, among the various lights were our Dimpsy/Path Marker lights, used to provide subtle illumination from behind the rocks and under the chair.
